Additional Information:
Amazon Advertising was started by two very creative directors who were
both tall and female and as they like to say, that is when things
started to get really interesting. They have become a group with a large
and diverse global clientele that ranges from Kashi and Mondavi Wines to
Jamba Juice and Beach Blanket Babylon to Harley Davidson and Wells
Fargo. Their work is intelligent, daring, often intoxicating and always
very humorous. We were asked to design their new offices within a 19th
century industrial warehouse building located in the Jackson Square
Historic District of San Francisco. Our goal was to create an
environment that further encourages and enhances creative and innovative
thinking, team work and boldly reinforce Amazon’s constant search for
the Holy Grail of Truth, Love and Advertising.
To enhance the eclectic nature of Amazon’s culture the office was
organized around a centrally located open kitchen and break area where
staff can collaborate while enjoying their favorite beverage and snack -
easily doubling as a flexible all hands area for meetings and informal
social gatherings.
The raw organic space of concrete floors, masonry bearing walls,
concrete columns and high ceilings contrasts with the modernist
vocabulary of large expanses of frameless glazing and white walls at the
private offices and meeting rooms. New energy efficient indirect
lighting is incorporated throughout. The space also incorporates low
height built-in sculptural partitions creating a series of two person
teaming areas. Amazon inspired accent colors were used sparingly
throughout the space culminating with a stripe of chartreuse floor
covering that starts at the lobby and continues through the length of
the entire space.
