Center
Project Location: 750 Central Expressway, Santa Clara, CA
Project Size: 155,272SF
Date completed: Winter
2005
Client: Hitachi Data
Systems USA
Additional Information:
Hitachi Data Systems, a leading data storage
manufacturer focuses primarily on business needs with industry-leading
storage products, a comprehensive portfolio of professional services and
industry solutions, and a worldwide network of strategic partners.
Located in Santa Clara, CA HDS has doubled their existing presence to
include an additional 155,000 SF. The new space is located adjacent to
their existing facility in a two-story building, with the ground floor
serving as an Executive Briefing Center and the upper floor as
additional staff space.
HDS's goals for the project were to create a light, airy "Zen-like"
environment for both customers and staff, and provide a variety of
flexible spaces which could easily adjust to the changing demographics
of both customers and staff. To accomplish these goals major building
modifications were completed to breath light and openness to the tilt-up
structure. Twenty-five foot square openings were cut into the roof and
second floor to allow daylight to penetrate the center of the building,
and an additional large opening was cut into the second floor to create
dramatic a two-story lobby, which became the main point of entry for
their entire facility.
The first floor Executive Briefing Center is focused around a granite
fountain with multi-purpose conferencing facilities radiating around the
center area. These in turn are surrounded by an exhibit space displaying
HDS's technology. Adjacent to the large
ceremonial lobby stair are two 16'-high vertical granite slab fountains
which were designed to flow into small pools at the ground level. At the
top of the stair one encounters the main transverse circulation path
which connects various "neighborhoods" of staff cubicle spaces. Directly
across the main street is a cluster of collaboration rooms centered
around the new skylit area. "Touch-down" areas were created to allow
customers and HDS staff from other facilities to quickly settle into
temporary work spaces, where connectivity and other support functions
are conveniently provided.
